A striking piece of Oceanic tribal art, this large woven mask originates from the Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea, likely created by the Abelam people. Known as a "Yam Mask", it was traditionally crafted to decorate giant ceremonial yams during harvest festivals, transforming the tubers into living ancestral spirits. The mask is expertly woven from rattan in a tight, textural pattern and features a prominent, ridge-like nose and small, staring eyes. A fringe of dyed natural fibers frames the face in a rusty red hue, adding movement and contrast to the dark, smoked finish of the weaving.
